Freedom of Information Act Section 8 Statement

The Reserve Bank is an exempt agency under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 in relation to documents in respect of its banking operations (including individual open market operations and foreign exchange dealings) and in respect of exchange control matters.

A statement in accord with Section 8(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 is contained in the Commonwealth Government Directory, Volume 2 (Treasurer's portfolio) 1986.

It sets out:

  1. the organisation, functions and powers of the Bank;
  2. the arrangements for consultation with people or bodies outside the Commonwealth administration;
  3. the categories of documents maintained by the Bank;
  4. arrangements for physical access by the public to documents accessible under the Freedom of Information Act; and
  5. the procedures under the Freedom of Information Act for obtaining access to documents.

In accord with Section 8(1)(b) of the Act the following brings up to date the information contained in that statement.

Reserve Bank Act 1959

In terms of the Banking Legislation Amendment Act 1986 the Rural Credits Department, established under Part VI of the Reserve Bank Act will be wound up at a date to be fixed, in consultation with the Treasurer.
