Call for Interest – Membership of Industry Groups Exploring Tokenisation

Following the publication of the Project Acacia final report, which presented the DFCRC and RBA’s research into the role of digital money in wholesale tokenised asset markets, we are requesting expressions of interest from industry stakeholders to participate in two industry groups: an industry advisory group on tokenisation and a working group to take forward the work of the Deposit Token Working Group.

Australian tokenisation advisory group

Project Acacia found that there was a need for a dedicated industry advisory forum to help identify and address the opportunities, challenges and policy considerations associated with scaling tokenised finance in Australia.

The Australian tokenisation advisory group will be a senior-level advisory forum and coordination body for supporting the development of wholesale tokenised finance in Australia. It will bring together industry expertise to identify and shape priorities, provide industry insights, and inform policy, regulatory and market discussions on the opportunities and challenges associated with wholesale tokenised financial markets. It is expected that the group will establish sub-groups or working groups of industry experts to focus on specific priority issues.

Representatives of the key policy and regulatory agencies are expected to attend meetings as observers and participants in discussions, as occurred with Project Acacia’s Industry Advisory Group. Accordingly, members of the group will have a key role in helping to shape Australia’s approach to tokenised assets and money.

Who can apply?

The group is intended to represent a broad range of industry interests related to the tokenisation of wholesale financial markets. It is expected that the group will meet four to six times per year. Membership is not limited to people working at Australian organisations, nor only those who participated in Project Acacia.

Priority will be given to leaders who can contribute relevant expertise from market infrastructure, financial services, investment, legal, technology or public policy perspectives and who can influence outcomes in their firms and in the broader industry. Familiarity with priority markets and tokenisation use cases, including from the investor community or buy-side, will be highly regarded.

Members will be expected to:

  • Provide expert insights on matters relating to tokenised wholesale financial markets.
  • Identify opportunities, challenges and priorities relevant to the adoption and scaling of tokenised finance.
  • Inform government, regulatory and industry initiatives through feedback, consultation and discussion.
  • Facilitate collaboration and information-sharing across industry, academia and the public sector.
  • Share practical experience and insights from international developments to support informed decision-making and market development.

Deposit token working group – Phase 2

We are also seeking expressions of interest from industry to participate in a working group to take forward the work of Project Acacia’s Deposit Token Working Group (DTWG).

Project Acacia recommended continuing and expanding the DTWG to deepen exploration into the potential form, functioning and interoperability of deposit tokens, in a risk-controlled environment. Promoting interoperability of different forms of money at par is an important priority for policymakers and market participants internationally.

The key policy and regulatory agencies have expressed interest in continuing to attend meetings of this group as observers; the RBA will have a particular interest in understanding what changes to central bank settlement arrangements might best support the work of the group.

Given the intention of moving to a build-and-test project, it is likely that participation in the group will largely be limited to experts from organisations wishing to participate in, and potentially fund, a project to test interoperable deposit tokens.

Who can apply?

Members may represent Australian and international authorised deposit takers, and other relevant organisations with an interest in:

  • Facilitating the interchange of deposit tokens between customers of different financial institutions, and potentially of other forms of tokenised private money.
  • Potential wholesale market use cases for tokenised deposits.
