Read me file

This ‘read me’ file contains details of the code and data included in this archive that were used to generate the results reported in RDP 2021-06.

If you make use of any of these files, you should clearly attribute the authors in any derivative work.

Data

The following data sources were used:

  • RBA survey data:
    • Internal RBA data – confidential and not available for release.
  • NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) data
    • Obtained from NESA – not available due to third-party provider terms.
  • Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) data:
    • Obtained from ACARA – School Profile 2008-2020, accessed via <https://www.acara.edu.au/contact-us/acara-data-access>.

The underlying data files from the RBA used by the code are not included in this archive; as such, the code for these files will not run.

The file ‘rdp-2021-06-graph-data.xlsx’ contains the publically available data used to directly plot the figures.

Code

The results reported in this RDP were generated using Stata 16.0 and using the ‘rdp_replication_file.do’ file.

The code involves several steps:

  1. Import the data and settle on the sample. There are options to exclude responses that are likely from ‘skimmers’ or ‘teachers’.
  2. Clean the data. This primarily involves creating dummy variables for the regression analysis, as well as recoding responses that were skipped or not applicable.
  3. Generate tables for the sample coverage and run the various regressions that are included in each of the tables. Robustness tests are also included.

Survey questionnaires

The Year 10, 11 and 12 student survey questionnaires are included in this archive.
