Opportunities for Researchers

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is committed to high-quality, policy-relevant research and strong engagement with the global economics community. We offer a range of opportunities for researchers at all career stages to contribute to our work, collaborate with our staff, and deepen their expertise.

Academic Research Advisers

We engage leading academics as ongoing research advisers to strengthen our research agenda and provide strategic guidance. Advisers act as trusted partners to RBA researchers, offering deep methodological and subject-matter expertise across a wide range of policy-relevant topics. They provide regular feedback on research projects, help strengthen written outputs, support collaboration and knowledge exchange, and, where relevant, contribute to the strategic direction of key research programmes. We seek experienced researchers with strong track records in both high-quality research and the mentoring of professional research teams.

External Experts

We engage external experts to address targeted capability needs and support priority research initiatives. These engagements bring specialised expertise to specific projects and ensure timely, high-quality research.

We provide funding for externally led research, which may be undertaken independently or jointly with RBA staff, depending on the project.

Visiting Scholars

Our Visiting Scholar Program enables close collaboration between external researchers and RBA staff on policy-relevant topics. Scholars contribute to joint research, advise on analytical approaches, and support knowledge exchange. We aim to attract established researchers, particularly those working in areas aligned with our research priorities. Calls for applications are typically issued one to two times per year.

Secondments with Peer Institutions

We support extended secondments with central banks and other peer institutions. These placements strengthen expertise, build international networks, and promote the exchange of best practice in policy-relevant research.

PhD Internship Program

Our PhD Internship Program provides doctoral students with the opportunity to work on high-value research projects within the Bank. Interns collaborate with staff on policy-relevant topics, gaining practical experience while contributing to the RBA’s research. The program is open to PhD students and recent graduates in economics, finance, data science, and related fields, with strong analytical and econometric skills.

Data partnerships

We partner with public and private sector organisations to unlock high-value data and generate new insights using innovative analytical approaches. These collaborations strengthen the evidence base for our policy work, enabling deeper, more timely analysis through advanced techniques, including machine learning and AI.
