Shaping the Future of 65 Martin Place
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is renewing its headquarters to create a workplace that meets the needs of a modern central bank. The new design reflects the original architectural style and restores several features that were removed or replaced over time.
The RBA has reached an important milestone in this process, lodging a new development application (DA) with the City of Sydney Council. This marks a significant step toward delivering a contemporary, sustainable workplace.
The application focuses on the buildings exterior, the heritage-listed ground floor foyer, and basement areas. Plans for office spaces will follow later in the project.
What the DA Proposes
The DA seeks approval to remove the existing structure back to its steel frame and rebuild a modern, energy-efficient building. The heritage-listed foyer and basement levels will be retained and integrated into the new design.
Council will assess the application and undertake a public notification process early next year. A decision is expected before mid-2026.
Key Design Features
- Enhanced natural light: A new façade with larger, uniform windows will improve light and views across all floors.
- Conference facilities: A purpose-built space will support collaboration and engagement.
- Flexible floor plans: A redesigned lift core will enable open, adaptable layouts.
- Heritage integration: The ground floor foyer will be carefully conserved and incorporated into the new design.
- Sustainability: Energy-efficient materials, solar panels, and waste minimisation measures will reduce environmental impact.
Respecting Heritage
As a heritage-listed site, the project has been developed in consultation with planning authorities. The design reflects the buildings original architectural style and reinstates features removed over time. Approval has also been granted by the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
