Media Release Financial Corporations Act 1974

The Governor of the Reserve Bank has the powers under the Financial Corporations Act 1974 relating to:

  • categorisation of registered corporations; and
  • exemption of corporations from the application of the Act.

Attached to this Media Release are:

  • copies of orders made under the abovementioned powers; and
  • complete lists, as at 26 June 2002, of
    • registered corporations by category, and
    • exempt corporations

Complete lists of registered corporations by category and exempt corporations as at 26 June 2002 are available on the Reserve Bank web site at www.rba.gov.au.

On 1 July 2002, the registration and categorisation of financial corporations becomes the responsibility of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA). This transfer of responsibilities is due to the commencement of the Financial Sector (Collection of Data) Act 2001, which repeals the Financial Corporations Act 1974 on 1 July 2002. Corporations that were previously registered under the Financial Corporations Act will be known collectively as Registered Financial Corporations (RFCs). Information is available on APRA's web site at www.apra.gov.au.
