INFLATION CALCULATORThe inflation calculator uses data on consumer and retail prices to calculate changes in the cost of purchasing a representative basket of goods and services. The inflation calculator can be used, for example, to show that a representative basket of goods and services costing $10 in 1970 would cost $26.93 in 1980 and $58.71 in 1990. The Australian currency was decimalised on 14 February 1966. Hence, for periods after (and including) March quarter 1966, the calculator assumes that values are denominated in dollar terms. For periods prior to March quarter 1966, the calculator assumes that values are denominated in pounds (£), shillings (s) and pence (d); at decimalisation, £1 was equivalent to $2. Quarterly data are available from June 1922 and annual data are available from 1901. Hence, quarterly calculations can be made using any quarters between June quarter 1922 and the most recent quarter of the published CPI, and annual calculations can be made using any years between 1901 and the most recent complete calendar year. Further information is provided in the description of data sources.Quarterly Calculator | Annual Calculator DisclaimerThe results produced by the Inflation Calculator are intended as guides only and should not be regarded as 'official' Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) calculations. While every effort has been made by the RBA to ensure that the data and formulae used to generate the results are accurate, the RBA accepts no liability or responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of the resulting calculations and recommends that users exercise their own care and judgment with respect to the Inflation Calculator's use.
