Reserve Bank of Australia Annual Report – 1981 Staff

The past year has seen a continuation of the heavy demands made on staff and the Board records its appreciation for the maintenance of the high standards of efficiency and loyalty displayed at all levels.

During 1980/81, staff numbers increased by 93 from 3,648 to 3,741; this compares with a rise of 83 in 1979/80 and falls of 24 in 1978/79 and of 57 in 1977/78. The rise this year is largely because of an increased volume of work in Registries of Inscribed Stock. Complementing internal examinations of methods and resources, an independent review of staffing levels in the Bank commenced in July 1981. The distribution of the Bank's staff over the past three years is shown below.

The figures for 30 June 1981 include a total of 96 officers on extended leave (including confinement and maternity leave) and 16 on secondment with other organisations in Australia and overseas. Mr J.S. Mallyon, a Chief Manager of the Bank, continued as a member of the Committee of Inquiry into the Australian Financial System.

Messrs G.M.E. Sceats, General Manager, Note Issue Department, Fitzroy, D.R. Richmond, Manager for South Australia, and G.R. Leighton, Senior Manager, Exchange Control Department, Head Office, retired from the Bank's service during the year. Messrs T.J. Bartley, Adviser, C.M. McClellan, Manager for Victoria and R.F. Jones, Manager for Tasmania, retired in July 1981 and Mr G.G. Welch, Senior Manager, Currency and Banking Operations Department, Head Office, retired in August 1981.
