RESERVE BANK OF AUSTRALIA

A. Cheques

(Explanatory Notes)

This return [XLS 30K] collects statistics on the usage of paper-based payment instruments (cheques). The reporting period runs to the last day of the calendar month; stock items, such as the number of accounts/facilities are to be reported as at the last day of the month.

The issuer of a customer cheque is responsible for completing the return. The issuer is the institution that provides a cheque account/facility to its personal or commercial customers. Financial institutions that provide cheque book access to their customers, where the cheques are drawn on another institution (i.e. through a cheque issuance facility), are to report as the issuer of these cheques in the agency column. Institutions on which agency cheques are drawn do not report these cheques.

The issuer of a financial institution cheque (i.e. historically known as a ‘bank cheque’) or money order is also responsible for completing section A.2 of the return.

Definitions of the terms used in this return are provided below.
