HELP ON SEARCHING

Searching through the RBA website is easy. Just type in a few words or phrases. Try to use discriminating terms that are likely to be found only in the documents you seek. The more words you give, the better results you'll get.

Here are some tips:

Search by typing words and phrases.

Role of interest rates in setting monetary policy

This search engine will find documents containing as many of these words and phrases as possible, ranked so that the documents most relevant to your query are presented first. Don't worry about missing a document because it doesn't have one of the words in your search – the search engine returns relevant results even if they don't contain all query terms.

Identify phrases with quotation marks, separate with commas.

Role of "interest rates", setting "monetary policy"

A phrase is entered using double quotation marks, and only matches those words which appear next to each other. Separate multiple phrases or proper names with a comma.

Use + to require a word and - to exclude it

price, +share -commodities

Price alone does not specify whether you are interested in share prices or the price of something else. You can require that the word share be in the document by using the plus sign.

Use UPPER case to indicate exact match.

Reserve Bank, CHESS

Search terms in lower case will match words in any case, but terms containing capital letters must match exactly. Searching using lower case words, even for proper names, will ensure that pages will be found even when the name is shown in all upper case on the page. That is, search for stevens to ensure you find pages with 'STEVENS' as well as 'Stevens'.

Searching only within certain kinds of information on a page

You can restrict searches to certain portions of web documents by using field syntax. This allows you to search for web pages' titles, URLs, embedded hypertext links, and any additional information defined with an HTML META tag. The field name should be in lower case, and immediately followed by a colon. There should be no spaces after the colon and before the search terms. For example:

  • title:"Statement on Monetary Policy"
finds pages with a TITLE tag or PDF files with a title field containing the phrase 'Statement on Monetary Policy'.
  • author:stevens
finds pages or PDF files with an author META tag or field containing the name 'Stevens'.
  • link:www.rbnz.govt.nz
matches pages (on the RBA website) that contain at least one link to a page with www.rbnz.govt.nz in its URL, that is, a page on the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's website.

Other fields that are available for searching in this way include site: and url:.
